What is the 100% nuts and peanuts product?
It is a blend of different nuts (hazelnut, cashew, and walnut) and peanuts, ground into powder for easy consumption, thus avoiding the risk of choking associated with whole nuts and peanuts.
Why in powder form?
Giving whole nuts or nut butter to a baby carries a significant risk of choking and suffocation. At Smileat, we have devised a convenient and safe way to help families introduce nuts and peanuts into the baby's diet. By grinding them, they can be easily added to various meals, eliminating this risk.
Who can take this product?
Any little one from 6 months onwards without food allergies and/or atopic dermatitis, or family history of allergies to nuts and/or peanuts; in case of doubt, consult with a medical professional.
How to take this product?
Following the general pediatric recommendations for introducing potentially allergenic foods, we recommend:
- Begin offering this product from 6 months onwards, once the baby has already consumed other foods and is ready to start complementary feeding.
- Start by mixing a teaspoon with the baby's preferred food, such as cereal porridge or fruit puree, for example. Observe the baby for the next two hours after consumption to check for any signs of allergies.
If the baby does not show allergy symptoms, repeat the next day the same teaspoonful (3g).
- From there, we recommend adding a few teaspoons to taste in their meals about 3 times a week and during the first year.
Time of first consumption?
It is preferable that the first consumption of this product be during the day, either during a meal or snack, so that any potential allergy symptoms can be observed during the following 2 hours.
This recommendation would apply to nuts as well as to any other allergenic product.
Why do you mix nuts and peanuts if they are different allergens?
-By mixing them, we ensure that they are all consumed on a frequent basis.
The protein structure of peanuts is very similar to that of tree nuts. For this reason, it is quite common for individuals allergic to peanuts to also be allergic to some tree nuts. In the case of an allergic reaction, it will be the specialist who identifies which ingredient or ingredients are responsible (cross-reactivity or specific allergy).
The product is intended for the general infant population without a family history of allergies or known allergies.
The blend of nuts and peanuts gives us a nutritionally dense product with a high fiber content and a substantial amount of high-quality plant-based protein.
Why cashew nuts, hazelnuts and walnuts?
The proteins in these tree nuts are very similar. After consulting with pediatricians and allergy experts during the product development, these three tree nuts were recommended because they are potentially more allergenic in the Spanish infant population.
Why peanut?
Peanut is a legume that is part of the group of the 14 major allergens. Nutritionally it has a high content of high quality vegetable protein.
